HMS Londonderry (1958); Warship; Frigate

Scale: 1:48. One of the latest examples of a shipbuilder’s model in the Museum’s collection traditionally made to a high standard despite its recent date of manufacture. The quality of the paintwork and attention to detail, in particular, is very good. It retains its original case with ‘speedframe’ joints. The model of the ‘Londonderry’ (1960) was made and presented to the Museum by the builders of the actual ship, J. Samuel White & Co. Ltd.

The ‘Rothesay’ class was a large class of frigates, nine of which were built by various yards in the UK for the Royal Navy and a further 11 for the Australian, New Zealand and South African navies, built by UK and Australian yards. These very sleek looking beasts were 110 metres (360 feet) in length and capable of a service speed of 30 knots. Their armament included a quadruple Seacat missile launcher, anti-aircraft guns and a Limbo three-barrelled depth charge mortar. ‘Londonderry’ was sunk as an object of target practice on 25 June 1989.
