HMS Kent (1961); Warship; Destroyer
Scale: 1:180. The model bears the hallmark style of the Glossop family of modelmakers to the Admiralty, though it is not to their usual impeccable standard. It shows the ship newly completed with the armament as originally installed and sailing at full throttle leaving a wake behind in the simulated sea base.
The eleventh HMS ‘Kent’ was built by Harland and Wolff, Belfast, launched in 1961 and commissioned two years later. It was one of the ‘County’- class destroyers and one of its more unusual roles was that of host ship to the ‘Withdrawal from Empire’ negotiations in Gibraltar. It attended the Jubilee Review at Spithead in 1977 and its Cold War career ended in 1984 when it became a harbour training ship for the Sea Cadet Corps. In 1998 it was towed to India to be broken up.
