Cleopatra (1977); Warship; Frigate; Leander-class
Scale: 1:64. A waterline model of HMS 'Cleopatra' (1964), a ‘Leander’-class frigate (escort vessel). The model is decked, equipped and rigged. The name ‘Cleopatra’ is painted on the quarters, together with ‘F28’ on the stern, amidships and bows. A plaque is inscribed ‘HMS Cleopatra 177 Scale 3/16th to 1.0 feet. Made by Capt D D E Hood, VRD, JP, RNR’. The vessel is depicted with crew on board and a Lynx helicopter on the after deck.
Built at Devonport dockyard, the ‘Leander’-class design was noted for strong performance in poor weather and heavy seas. This was made possible through twin rudders, twin propellers and non-retractable fin stabilizers. It was used as a training ship in 1967 and then from 1968 as a patrol vessel. In that year she was deployed to the Far East and participated in the Biera Patrol, designed to prevent oil reaching landlocked Rhodesia via the then Portuguese colony of Mozambique. HMS ‘Cleopatra’ was eventually sold for scrap and broken up in 1993.
