HMS Alacrity (1974); Warship; Frigate
Scale: 1:96. A full hull model of HMS 'Alacrity' (1974), an Amazon Class Type 21 frigate (escort vessel). The model is decked fully and equipped and rigged. ‘Alacrity’ is painted on the port and starboard quarters and superstructure, ‘AL’ on the landing deck and ‘F174’ is on the port and starboard broadsides and stern. The model shows the standard radar fit of the Type 21 design with Lynx Mark 2 helicopters on the landing deck.
Built by Yarrow at Glasgow, ‘Alacrity’ was laid down March 1973 and commissioned July 1977. It measured 384 feet in length by 42 feet in the beam and displaced 2750 tonnes standard. It was the first custom-built gas-turbine frigate (as opposed to a conversion).
‘Alacrity’ was among the Task Force that visited Shanghai, China in the autumn of 1980, the first RN ships to visit China for many years. It then served in the Falklands and was involved in various operations including landing Royal Marines of the SBS on reconnaissance of potential landing sights. It also received considerable acclaim for undertaking a night passage through the straits between East and West Falkland to establish whether mines had been laid.
Whilst in Falkland Sound 10 May 1982, ‘Alacrity’ sank the Argentine supply ship ‘Islas de los Estados’ which was carrying aviation fuel. It also gave fire-fighting assistance to ‘Atlantic Conveyer’ after it had been hit by an Exocet missile and eventually rescued survivors. In 1983 ‘Alacrity’ took part in the Gulf of Oman Patrol. She was sold to Pakistan in 1994.
