Service vessel; Liferaft; Chipchase liferaft
Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a liferaft (circa 1943) made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings and painted and varnished in realistic finishes. The depicted vessel is complete with a steel launching slide as would be fitted to most ships during the Second World War. There are two rectangular cutaway sections on either side of the deck to show the internal construction. The hull is straight-sided, flat-bottomed and largely made up of rectangular planks, varnished a golden finish. Fittings include a distress lamp fixed to a rope and a lifering. The model is displayed on a rectangular wooden baseboard with bevelled edges. The launching slide is bolted to the baseboard and, in front of it, is a section of guard rail. On model ‘Chipchase Patent Life-Craft’. On plaques ‘Approved by the Ministry of War transport Pers.24. Date 28-4-43’ and ‘Emergency Raft. The Seaman's second line of defence’. It is known that a number of these rafts were manufactured by Hall & Sons boatyard, South Shields, Tyne and Wear.
