Service vessel; Pontoon
Scale: not calculated. A model of a pontoon boat that the Museum acquired from the Training Ship Mercury. According to its catalogue, the model was equipped with “a raft carriage and stores complete”. Most of its equipment has now been lost but the model does retain six long, sledge-like runners with rounded ends that have been reinforced with brass. They have the remains of rope ties still attached to them and one of them is slightly different in having wooden nodules running along its length. The pontoon might have been designed for the carriage of horses because at either end there are two raised trays that could be used for feed. The pontoon has also been divided into sections that look a little like stalls or pens.
