Owhiti (1924); Cargo vessel; Scow
Scale: 1:48. Half block model of the starboard side of the New Zealand ketch-rigged scow 'Owhiti' (1924) made entirely in pine or similar soft wood. The starboard side hull is made of three vertical sections of wood held together by three horizontal dowels that protrude slightly above and below the hull. The hull of the depicted vessel is flat-bottomed, straight-sided. On the deck face, numbered 150, the lines show the deck beams, mast partners and semi-circles on the centreline show the position of masts, while the other face shows bow planking.
The 21.8 metre 'Owhiti' was built in 1924 by Darroch of Omaha, Auckland. Scows became popular working boats in New Zealand during the late 19th century as the shallow draught enabled them to enter shallow water. The 'Owhiti' was purchased and restored for use in the 1983 film "Savage Islands" starring Tommy Lee Jones.
