Aylen's anchor

Scale: Unknown. A model of an Aylen's patent anchor (circa 1851?). The model is largely made from steel which has been 'blued' and consists of a rounded shank which is oval in section and tapers down to a crescent-shaped crown with arms, on which are mounted two conventionally shaped palms. The rounded shank then tapers into a rectangular square section with two small tapering shoulders, a circular section through which the metal stock passes, and finally the top is complete with a moving bow shackle. The stock is round in section with slightly tapering ends which finish with a rounded button, one of which is bent through 90 degrees. There is a metal fid secured to the stock by a small chain which, when removed, allows the stock to be run through and stowed flat alongside the shank for close stowage aboard the ship.
