Scale: Unknown. Model of a horizontal marine steam engine of the type manufactured by Maudslay, Sons, and Field (circa 1860). The model is made largely of wood with steel working parts including a piston rod and a handle for turning the engine. A cross section through the engine is depicted, the engine housing frame and cylinder are made in wood and painted grey. An arrow is attached to the engine bed below the handle, to show that the handle is turned in an anti-clockwise direction. A narrow cross section of the lower part of a ship is depicted showing the keel, lower frames, floor frames, hull planking, and engine bed, all made in oak, and stained and varnished a mid-brown colour. The keel is mounted directly onto a simple rectangular oak baseboard and the model is supported on either side by a pair of black-painted metal stabiliser bars. Also attached to the base board is a brass plaque screwed to a wooden plinth inscribed "Sectional model showing internal arrangement of horizontal marine steam engines, as fitted in ships of the Royal Navy, by Maudslay Sons and Field October 1860."
