Engine, steam
Scale: 1:12. A model of a quadruple expansion marine steam engine (circa 1920?) made entirely in metal and painted in realistic colours. The model shows the engine bed, frame, section of keel, rudder housing, four-bladed propeller, and propeller shaft. The structural components of the model are painted black and the engine bed is finished in a silver metal grid pattern. The engine is supported by four large A-frames whose legs are rectangular in section and the whole structure is painted cream. A companion ladder provides access to two raised walkways which in turn provide access to all sides of the engine. At the top of the engine is the case for the four pistons. The piston covers are finished in unpainted steel with brass fittings and the casing is painted matt black. On both sides of the casing there are large pipes clad in asbestos and painted matt white. A large copper pipe on the port side of the engine links the centre of the casing to a large cream coloured cylinder. The piston rods beneath the casing are connected to the crankshaft which is partly below the surface of the engine bed. The model is mounted on a large mahogany plinth.
