Great Eastern (1858); Passenger/cargo vessel; Liner
Topographic model of John Scott Russell's shipyard, Millwall (1858), built at a scale of 1:200. This model shows the ‘Great Eastern’ at Millwall on the Isle of Dogs on the north bank of the Thames, near Greenwich. Designed by the 19th century engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was powered by paddle wheels, a single propeller and sails. The largest ship ever built on the River, it took several attempts over three months to launch it sideways. The detailed view of this model shows the construction of the paddlebox whilst in the foreground is the artist from the Illustrated London News afloat in a small rowing boat sketching the event..
