Topographical model; Scenic model
Scale: Not to scale. A topographical model depicting fishermen with two hog-boats on the shore at Brighton, about 1880. The model shows a section of beach, made from sand, with the sea made from a composite material, possibly plaster, modelled and painted realistically. The larger of the two boats is beached with its stern in the water, the smaller vessel is beached further up on the foreshore. Other features include three tall, net-drying huts, made from slatted timbers with pitched roofs, stained black. The door of one hut is depicted open, with its nets hanging out to dry. A portable winch is set up on the foreshore, worked by a horse, pulling in the larger boat. Fourteen figures are shown, three in the larger boat, seven pulling in the boat, two laying out a net on the beach, and two handling a two-wheeled cart. The larger vessel has a black-painted hull with bright blue details including leeboards. It is two-masted with three sails set. The smaller vessel is lug-rigged, also with two masts.
