Warship; Frigate
Scale: 1:48. A model of a circular bow for a Royal Naval frigate (1840) made entirely in wood and painted in realistic colours. The hull is painted black with a broad white stripe along the gundeck and white at the waterline. The section of deck and inboard bulwarks are cream and the inner faces of the ten depicted gunports are red. Fittings include a pair of catheads with garter star end decoration; gilded figurehead depicting a warrior; decoratively carved and painted trailboards with scroll and acanthus leaf work in chrome yellow; stump section of bowsprit, painted cream with stylised broken end; and two pairs of heads located either side of the bowsprit. The section elevation is open at gun deck level to show how the bowsprit is secured. The model is mounted on an almost square baseboard, painted green, with a hand-written paper label, with hand-rendered line boarder "Circular Bow of a Frigate, by Thomas Roberts Esqr Master Shipwright, Royal Dock Yard Devonport." The baseboard slides in to a mahogany-framed display case, which is glazed on three sides and top, and enclosed by a vertical-sliding rear mahogany panel.
