Fighting vessel
Scale: Unknown. A plank on frame model showing the mechanism for raising and lowering Captain Shank's patent sliding keel. The whole is made of wood which has been stained and varnished to a dark brown colour over all with some metal fittings. The model is constructed from a series of frames connected to the keel and keelson, two decks with beams, carlings and ledges and planked and capped bulwarks above the upper deck. One half of the hull shows the traditional construction of the upper deck while the other side shows Shank's proposed diagonal bracing needed to support the keel trunking and the effect of compression as a result of leeway on the sliding keel. The planked section of the trunking has been annotated with the letter B painted in white on one side whereas the lower section has been left unplanked to show the keel itself. Along the centre line and above the deck are two raised geared winches which raise and lower the sliding keel, one of which is annotated with the letter A painted in white, together with a series of five hinged flaps to prevent the ingress of water.
