Equipment model; Steering gear model

Scale: Unknown. A model of an eight-spoke ship's steering wheel. The model has been made entirely in brass and steel and the working steering mechanism is supported on two pairs of pillar supports, which are secured to a simple rectangular baseboard. The baseboard is mahogany, stained and polished a traditional red-brown colour. The boss of the wheel is fixed to the axle by a hexagonal nut. On the other side of the boss, a cog wheel drives two further cogs either side of it which turn a pair of shafts that have threads cut into them. The turning of these shafts cause a bar to slide back and forth along them, and also along a third shaft that is placed between them. When the left-hand side of the bar is travelling up the left-hand shaft, the right-hand side travels down the right-hand shaft and vice-versa. The ends of the three shafts and the axle are held in position by a brass securing frame fixed to the baseboard by the taller pair of pillar supports. A second, smaller frame directly behind the cogs, is fixed to the baseboard by the shorter pair of pillar supports.
