HMS Tribune (1853); Warship; 31 guns
Scale: Unknown. A stern section of HMS Tribune (1853), 31 gun corvette showing the steering arrangement used to avoid the propeller lifting trunking. The hull is carved from several large pieces of solid wood, painted a matt black on the outside, while inside the model is finished in a sandy brown colour. The hull has been split into two sections, the after section shows the stern which is pierced for five gunports, a small section of decking half of which is planked and the other is half is left in frame. The trunking which is in the shape of a cross is fitted amidships and projects above this deck. The metal tiller and steering gear, which is made in metal, is painted black and is rigged with a series of ropes and sheaves which is eventually led forward to the forward part of the model and wrapped around the drum of the double wheel (damaged). The forward part of the model consists of a small section of ship's side together with two layers of decking which is complete with deck beams and a small section of planking at either side. The wheel is mounted on the upper deck and consists of a series of metal pins projecting from circular discs, all of which is painted black. The whole model is mounted on a waterline base which is finished in a light-grey colour. On the forward part of the upper deck on the port side is a small paper label on which is handwritten: 'Stern of frigate showing steering apparatus 1864-37.'
