HMS Niobe(1866); Wooden Screw Sloop; 4 Guns

Scale: Unknown. A working model of a double steering wheel as fitted to HMS Niobe (1866), a single screw sloop. The pair of ten spoked wheels, drum, arched brackets and baseboard are made from stained and polished mahogany. The patent Fayner & Robinsons "friction band" mechanism, drum axel mounts and deck feet are cast in brass and gilded. The friction band mechanism is operated by two foot plates either side of the drum at deck level and acted as a method of control when operating the wheel during heavy weather conditions.

There is a brass plaque screwed to the baseboard "Fayner & Robinson Patentees 1850" and two printed paper labels inscribed "13" and "17". There is also a metal display label, painted black, stored with the model and is inscribed "Steering wheel Fitted with Fayner and Robinsons "friction band" Proposed by Commander Fayner RN in 1865. Fitted to H M S "Niobe" and others 1865-1876". The model itself is inscribed on the upper portion of the drum axle stand is "Invented by R. I. Fayner, RN".
