Temporary port lid; Warship

Scale 1:12. Sectional model of a ship's side depicting the gun port with a temporary port lid. The outboard face is finished in a creamy yellow with the internal face of the port itself finished in red, with black top sides and rear face. The internal face is finished in a darker creamy yellow and is complete with several paper labels denoting it as part of the Mercury collection and has been inscribed in partially illegible hand written ink 'temporary port lid as fitted at Sheerness 18?'. The temporary port lid pivots in the middle which is rectangular in shape and the top leans inboard. It has been constructed in such a way that the lid opens to a maximum of aproximately 45 degrees and would suggest it would be used for ventilation rather than operating a gun. On the inner face are a series of iron ring bolts to which the gun tackles and rigging for the gun port lid was attached.
