Allyn's Patent American Capstan

Scale: Unknown. Large scale working model of a single drumhead capstan (1853) as patented by the American inventor Mr Allyn. The drumhead is made in brass and can be fitted with six capstan bars located in the square recesses. The rest of the body of the capstan is cast in iron and is complete with seven hinged pawls locking into the circular toothed base. The whole model is mounted on a stained wooden rectangular baseboard and at the opposite end to the capstan, is a rounded shoulder, with a groove to guide the rope down a small hole. Base of capstan inscribed "Allyn's patent American capstan 1853 Swayne & Bovill sole proprietor London.". Number "11200" on label. According to the catalogue entry, the brass drumhead is worked by bars which turn the whelps and base in the opposite direction.
