Equipment model; Windlass model

Scale: Unknown. Working model of a windlass (1845) worked by a thwartship lever, which, when operated in a vertical motion operates the windlass. The model has been made in wood, brass and steel. The windlass is made from turned mahogany and supported at either end by two shaped, black painted supports. The centre of the windlass drum is made of a copper coloured metal and notched allowing the ratchet to operate. On either side a steel chain set in a brass frame is attached to a pair of fixed levers which are in turn fixed to the double handled operating lever. This lever pivots on a central steel pin and the steel arms have wooden bar handles at either end. The model is displayed on a simple white painted wooden baseboard, whose top front edge has been rounded off.
