Equipment model; Windlass model
Scale: Unknown. A model of a windlass with an asymmetric ratchet mechanism. The model has been made of mahogany, stained and polished a traditional red-brown colour, with brass fittings. The windlass is supported at either end by asymmetrically figured brackets secured to a rectangular mahogany baseboard with a bevelled edge. The baseboard has an oval brass plaque attached to it inscribed "Model of double purchase ship's windlass patented by John Holman (senior) Topsham". The centre of the windlass has a conventional brass ratchet, the plate of which is secured to a vertical mahogany post, located immediately abaft of the windlass and mounted on the baseboard. The post also holds in place a brass bar which passes through the post at an oblique angle when viewed from above. The bar is attached at either end to pulleys that move alternately up and down and work the windlass. The bar extends through the figured brackets terminating in attachments into which two pairs of long handles are fitted (two handles accompany model). By operating the handles in an up-and-down motion the windlass can be worked.
