Sectional model; Component model

Scale: 1:12. A design model depicting the midship section of a deck fitted with a covered companionway and skylight as fitted to a warship in 1866. The model is made almost entirely of stained, varnished and polished wood, all of which is secured to a rectangular section of wooden deck scored with individual planks. The model also suggests that the glazed structure is demountable and is secured by hinged metal clamps to the permanently fixed hatch and companionway coambings. The glazed sides of the skylight are fitted with vertical metal bars to protect the glass from damage by feet or equipment on deck. The glazed sections are in two parts within a wood frame and can be slid horizontally to provide ventilation below. The wooden hatch covers, complete with both single and double circular scuttles, are hinged along their inboard edges with pivoting and adjustable metal arms underneath to hold them in place for ventilating below deck. There is also a central slightly raised and angled section with hinged wooden panels surrounding three sections of glass again protected by vertical metal bars. The smaller square section part also includes a wooden grating and a hinged curved wooden hood providing protection for the ladderways below. Internally, there are three large rectangular removable sections of grating providing both protection and ventilation. All the glazed areas are made from mica to simulate the use of glass. There is also a label mounted on black painted card and pinned to the deck. It has been cut out of the South Kensington Museum catalogue ( 1869 edition) and glued to the card backboard.
