Sectional model; Midship model
Scale: 1:24. A model depicting the midship section of a warship (circa 1866), made entirely in wood and painted in realistic colours. The model was made to show the method of fitting lightning conductors to masts adopted by all HM ships circa 1866, but the mast, it's housing and the lightning conductor are now missing. The positions of three decks are indicated by deck beams, three sides of which are painted off-white. The external hull is painted a copper colour below the water line, black above, and divided by a fine off-white line. The internal hull, keelson and fittings in the orlop are also painted an off-white colour. The position of the mast is indicated by the mast step in the middle of the lowermost deck area and two pieces cut away from the main deck beams above. The model is supported at the keel by two keel blocks and these are attached to a mahogany base standing on four bun feet. Two pairs of stabiliser bars support the model on either side of the hull.
