Service vessel; Liferaft; Sailing liferaft
Full hull model of a proposed sailing liferaft (1862), at a scale of 1:12, made from various spars and empty powder casks that could be either assembled on deck or salvaged from a sinking sailing ship. The model is rigged with the sails set and is inscribed ‘Tier of empty powder cases studding sail booms and planks’, ‘spare main topsail yard’, ‘cross jack yard’, ‘hand mast’, ‘mast fish’, ‘tier of empty butts’, ‘main topmast’, ‘spare fore topsail yard’, ‘driver boom’ and ‘tier of empty powder cases studding sail booms and planks’.
