Edith & Annie (1888); Service vessel; Lifeboat; Watson cabin lifeboat

Builder's full hull model of the Watson class lifeboat 'Edith & Annie', launched in 1888. The model is decked and equipped, with six blue oars, six red oars, two boat hooks loose in the hull and a lifebuoy. It is steered by a rudder and tiller and the rig was a two-masted dipping/standing lug. ‘Southport lifeboat’ is inscribed on the port and starboard broadsides together with ‘Macrae’ on the starboard bow. ‘National Lifeboat Institution supported solely by voluntary contributions’ is written on the port and starboard bows. The year ‘1888’ is on the stern deck and the number ‘208’ is on the bow deck.

This class was the first to be fitted with a drop keel amidships, designed to help the counter being blown sideways by the wind, known as leeway. Internally, the hull is fitted with four relieving tubes either side of the keel and four quarter bollards used for towing and warping down to a casualty using a canvas sea anchor, known as a drogue. Externally, the hull is fitted with a wood and cork fender for added buoyancy as well as providing additional protection when coming alongside a casualty. Hanging below this are rope grablines used for retrieving casualties from the water.
