Pathfinder (1903); Fishing vessel; Coble
Picture model of the fishing coble 'Pathfinder' built in 1903. The hull is made as a half block mounted to a painted framed backboard. It is inscribed with its name and port registration marks ‘BH14’, indicating it was registered at Blyth in Northumberland. The hull shape of these boats enabled them to be launched directly from the beach into the surf and proved very efficient both under oars and sail. This model is identical to the work identified by the late-19th-century artist J. Fannen who was known as a ship portrait painter on the North East coast.
