Victoria (1850); Service vessel; Lifeboat; Pulling and sailing lifeboat

Scale: 1:12. A contemporary full hull, plank on frame model of a pulling and sailing lifeboat (1850). The hull has been built in diagonal fashion, is double-ended and pulls twelve oars through rope grommets on the gunwale. It is fitted with air cases internally to prevent sinking should the hull become damaged or holed, as well as relieving tubes to drain water should the hull become awash. To protect the hull when launched and recovered from the beach, there is an additional layer of copper sheathing. This style of lifeboat was later used aboard large passenger ships and by some foreign lifesaving societies who preferred the surfboat principal.
