18-gun 6th Rate Sloop (1800)

Scale: unknown. A contemporary builder’s half frame model of an 18-gun sixth-rate sloop (1800) mounted onto a painted backboard. The hull is made up of cross sections, which have been secured to the painted background, which looks to represent a small-scale shipyard on a river or coastal beach, over which planking has been fastened down to the main wales. Below the waterline, the frames are left exposed and held in place by ribbands, or thin strips of wood, which were removed prior to planking. The hull is pierced for 18 guns and a small-scale full-length figurehead is fitted to the bow. The keel, deadwood and lower frames are finished in a dark red lead colour with the rest of the hull in a dark brown or black.
