Maria (fl.1898); Passenger/cargo vessel

Scale: Unknown. A half block model of the starboard side of the passenger and cargo ship Maria (active 1898) made entirely in wood and partly painted. The hull is polished below the waterline a mid-brown finish and is made up of several horizontal pieces of wood that resemble stylized planking. The hull above the waterline is painted black. The hull is flat-bottomed, straight-sided and has raised bulwarks amidships. Fittings include stump foremast and mainmast; two cargo hatch covers on each of the fore and aft decks; superstructure placed amidships; and provision for a single propeller. The model is displayed on a rectangular mahogany backboard with bevelled edges. On starboard bow ‘Maria’. Hand rendered on bottom right-hand corner of backboard ‘Dimensions Length B.P. 340'-0" Breadth Ext. 48'-0" Depth Mld. 29'-0" ’ and ‘John Priestman & Co, Shipbuilders Sunderland’.
