Service vessel; Block ship

Scale: unknown. A contemporary full hull model of a block ship (1800) carved from a solid piece of wood. It is complete with a series of long square spars projecting from the hull both vertically and horizontally around the hull. These vessels were normally converted from old and redundant ships and used to prevent access to enemy shipping in a river or estuary. Although this model does not show any form of propulsion, they could be either sailed or towed into position and were then anchored or even partially submerged.
