Cargo vessel; Junk

Scale: unknown. A model of a bipod masted junk made entirely of wood with organic material fittings. The model is unpainted and is stained and varnished in a uniform mahogany brown colour. The hull is flat bottomed, with a wide flat keel that curves upwards at the bow and stern. There are three rubbing strakes on each of the port and starboard sides running the entire length of the hull. The hull has a bluff bow and on the port and starboard sides there is an extension running virtually the length of the hull. The extensive cabin area is positioned from the stern to virtually the bow leaving only a short foredeck. The foredeck includes a four bar capstan and a ridged semi circular cabin roof made of wood. Sitting on the semi circular roof and projecting from it is a curved awning made from slatted and latticed bamboo. The main cabin area extends the semi circular form and is made from wood panels with three square port holes on each of the port and starboard sides. The port holes are depicted with their wooden covers closed. At the aft end is an entry port on the port and starboard sides with double doors, the starboard doors appear to be fixed, the port doors can be opened. Above the main cabin roof supported on five pairs of frames is a long rectangular flat roof, made in sections from wooden planks and with what appears to be two pitched skylights or hatch covers. Rigged to either side of the flat roof and supported on the hull extensions is a single bipod mast, the port side mast terminating at a higher point than the starboard mast. The two mast pieces are connected at the top by three metal pins and strengthed by five cross pieces. The mast is stayed at six places forwards and two places aft, the aft stays are braced with a single yard. It is rigged with a single sail made from woven fibre. The deck of the flat roof is equipped with a single windlass with six bars. At the stern end of the starboard walkway is an outside cabin. The stern cabin area has a curved roof forward and a flat roof aft above which is an open frame. The large rudder is operated by a tiller, the arm of which extends forward above the flat roof. The model is displayed on a pair of short rectangular supports attached to a rectangular baseboard, with bevelled edges, grained to resemble walnut and sits on four bun feet.
