Fishing vessel; Oruwa

Scale: unknown. A model of an Oruwa, an outrigger canoe made entirely in wood, unpainted and unvarnished. The hull has been carved from a single piece of wood which has been dugout and a pair of washstrakes have been sewn to it. Rectangular stem and stern pieces are sewn to the washstrakes. A pair of composite outrigger booms are rigged to the starboard side of the hull and slope downwards. The booms are secured to the hull by means of two short battens passing through the strakes directly beneath the booms and to which the booms are tied. The booms are made of curved bamboo and are strengthened by additional pieces of dowelling that are tied to the bamboo. The outrigger float is carved from a single piece of wood, pointed at its forward end and blunt at the rear end. The single mast is rigged to the starboard side and secured to the forward boom and brace. The mast curves rearward and is belayed at two points forward, one point aft and at points on the ends of the outrigger booms. The single sail is made of hessian fixed to a bamboo yard. There is a label with '14' adhered to the port side of the bow.
