Acorn (fl.1780); Service vessel

Scale: 1:48? A contemporary full hull model of the ‘Acorn’ (active 1780). It is decked and complete with a number of fittings such as gratings, hatches and a large heavy-duty windlass. Judging by the extreme shape of the hull around the bow and the windlass on deck, this vessel was probably used for lifting or recovering heavy objects from a river or seabed as the bulbous shape would provide extra buoyancy as a stable platform for the windlass. The vessel was probably single-masted since there is not much more room for another mast, and was steered by a tiller. It also has a painted stern gallery with the name ‘Acorn’ on the lower counter.
