Calypso; Warship; French frigate

Scale: Unknown. A sectional model depicting the port side, midship area of the gun deck, of the French frigate Calypso. The model has been made entirely of wood in the plank-on-frame style. The outboard hull is painted black with a white stripe along the gun ports. Inboard the model is painted white on the ceiling plankings, the deck beams and knees of both decks, with the planking on the decks stained and varnished natural wood. The bulwarks are finished a pea green colour with black capping and waterways.

The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden baseboard stained and varnished. The model illustrates the damage caused by a collision between the Calypso and HMS Talavera. It has a section carved around the area of the gun port planking, deck planking and a section of the bulwark in detail to show the damage resulting from the collision. At either end of the hull section can be seen the make-up of the hull frames and planking in section.

There are three paper labels applied to the outside of the hull, two of which are printed with the number "2" and "850" and the other larger label is hand written in ink "Sc. Mus. VII.I 1920-342". On the underside of the base, hand written in pencil is "Section of side of French Frigate "Calypso"".
