HMS Bellerophon (1865); Warship; Armoured central battery warship

Scale: Unknown. A model of the steering wheel of the armoured central battery warship HMS Bellerophon (1865). The triple wheel has been made in wood and brass and is mounted on a wooden baseboard that has been made to resemble deck planking. Each wheel has twelve spokes and the wooden components have been painted black. The spokes have all been finely turned and the three bosses of each wheel of top dead centre have been capped in brass. The hub of each wheel has been made in lacquer-coated steel which resembles brass. The double wheel is connected by a wide diameter, turned mahogany axle. The third auxiliary wheel is connected to the double wheel by a metal axle. There are three supports - the two double wheel supports have been made from decoratively shaped wood and the third support is a bell-shaped iron bracket. The support at one end contains a dial indicating the ships direction and is marked '3 2 1 M 1 2 3'. There are two brass objects secured to the deck the tops of which can be removed in a sliding action.
