Burmese War Boat

Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a Burmese war boat complete with a steering oar and three paddles. The forward three quarters of the hull is carved from a single piece of wood to which the high upward curving stern (damaged and with the prat missing) has been added just aft of where the rudder is mounted. This type of construction is known as an extended dugout or pirogue. Externally, the hull is painted a gloss black with floral and geometric decoration at the bow and stern. There is a pair of washstrakes, painted a dark red, resting above the eight thwarts and lashed to vertical thole pins located at either end of each thwart. At the bow there is a flat mitre shaped platform which is painted dark red and edged in a dark green, the gunwales and stern deck area are also in a dark green, while the thwarts and lower hull are finished in a varnished natural wood. The rudder is decorated with a carved floral design, alternating in the dark red and green colours, with a dark green shaft and a varnished natural wood tear shaped blade. The three paddles have rounded and tapering shafts painted dark green leading into flat and tapering varnished wooden blades.
