Fishing vessel; Junk

Scale: Unknown. Model of a Chinese fishing junk made entirely of wood with metal and organic material fittings. The model has been stained and painted in realistic colours. The hull is flat bottomed curving upwards at the bow and stern. The gunwales are painted bright red and extend slightly beyond the stern. There are five thole pins attached to the sides of the gunwales, two on the port side (currently detached) and three on the starboard side (one broken).The large rudder is made in wood, varnished and has black painted fitting details. The rudder post passes through a clamp like fitting and has at the top two single blocks with a tiller. The end of the tiller has two pegs on its upper face to accommodate a steering oar. The counter has two notches and the upper face of it is painted red. The deck is stained or painted a dark brown colour and there are two hatches, the aft hatch has a single hatch cover, the main hatch has six covers in line. The single mast is accommodated forward of the amidships and has a single sail with yards at the top and bottom. The sail is made of hessian and the rigging is coarse hemp. A short bowsprit with a sheath at the end is rigged to the starboard side and on the port side stowed slightly over the bow is a four armed grapnel made of metal and painted black. Rigged to the grapnel are two lengths of rope that are coiled around two simple capstans. The model is equipped with a sail, two boat hooks, four composite sweeps with rectangular blades and handles, and two oars with spade shaped blades. The model is displayed on a pair of tall decoratively shaped crutches, attached to a rectangular baseboard, with straight bevelled edges and sitting on bun feet. A painted wire metal display stand accompanies the model.
