Calypso; Gozotian cargo boat
Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a Gozotian cargo boat from Malta named Calypso. The hull is constructed entirely from wood in plank-on-frame fashion. Externally, the lower hull and keel are painted a mid green above which is a black boot topping to just below the scuppers for the deck. At this level there is a thin wale painted a light blue amidships and red, white, and blue at the bow and stern above which at the bow on either side is a pair of circular white motifs edged in blue. Above the wale to the gunwale capping is a single plank run painted light green and with scuppers cut into it at deck level. On top of the gunwale capping are eight individual washboards on either side of the hull which slot into removable grooved posts. The stem and stern post are almost vertical and carry on past the very curved sheer of the gunwale capping. The light green rudder is mounted to the stern post with gudgeons and pintles and is topped with a short wooden tiller painted yellow. At the bow there is a small yellow area on which is painted a pair of oculi. Internally the hull is partially decked with decks painted a pinkish red at the bow and stern and there is a single plank running around the cargo space. The cargo hatch is rectangular and slightly oval in shape and complete with coamings and three hatch covers. The rig consists of two masts clamped to fixed thwarts, rigged settee fashion, as well as a small wooden bowsprit secured to the foremast and stemhead. Each mast is supported by two pairs of rope shrouds secured by double blocks and are painted yellow. The cargo hold consists of 12 bottom boards all of which have been numbered by a series of dots and vertical marks. They are finished in a natural varnished wood. There are a pair of oars with rope grommets just after the looms, with the circular shaft tapering towards a flat oval shaped blade. They can be operated on two pairs of metal thole pins just aft of the main mast and forward of the tiller. The model is mounted on crutches on a wooden oval shaped base which has been painted black.
