Cargo vessel; Junk; Foochow pole

Scale: Unknown. A model of a hua-p'i-ku or Foochow pole junk made entirely in wood. The exterior hull is painted black below the uppermost of five gunwales, and brightly painted above in pink, lime green, yellow, red, light blue, mid-green, and white. There are realistically painted oculi on the port and starboard bows. The model is decorated with a brightly coloured, and highly detailed, decorative scene on the stern which includes a phoenix rising from stylised flames, clouds, cherry blossom trees, flowers and Chinese characters. The decks are unpainted and unpolished pale wood. There are three masts, all rigged with sails. The foremast is heavily raked forward. The mainmast has, at the top, a yellow orb, red flag, red pennant, and lightning conductor. The mizzen mast also has a red flag and a lightning conductor. Unlike actual vessels the mizzen mast has been depicted placed centrally on the poop deck. There is a removable wooden canopy forward, that occupies the entire width of the deck (broken in two places). A large cargo hatch in the waist of the vessel can be accessed by three removable hatch covers. A fourth, fixed hatch is made in a much darker wood. There is a smaller hatch forward, beneath the canopy. Equipment includes a gun mounted on a 'metal' capstan on the starboard side of the deck, a conventional wooden capstan on the port side, stocked anchor, a lantern mounted to a pole on the upper aft deck, two boat hooks, a boat, three brightly painted life rings, and a gangplank.
