Pechili trading junk
Scale: circa 1:40. Full hull model of a type of Northern Chinese junk known as a Pechili Trader (or also as a Kiangsu Trader, Shantung Trader or Shantung Five-masted junk). The main lower hull is carved from a solid piece of wood with the bow, stern, topsides, and decks held on by pins and glue. Overall the hull is turret built with a bluff bow, broad flat stern, and an overhanging counter enclosing the rudder well. The hull is flat bottomed and is divided by 21 bulkheads internally. Only the main and foremast are stepped in a pair of tabernacles along the centre line, both of which are slightly raking. The other three masts are located either against the side of the hull or inboard of the stern counter. The masts, depending on their location, either rake forwards or aft towards the stern and are rigged with near rectangular shaped sails with the addition of a topsail set on the mainmast. The model is finished overall in natural wood and varnished throughout apart from the two guns which are painted silver and are mounted on what look to be circular pedestals, and the carved inscription on the transom. The flat stern is highly decorated with deeply carved floral decoration with a Chinese inscription running horizontally across the centre of the stern. The model is complete with various fittings including five masts with fully batterned sails together with rope rigging (one mast and sail missing), two Chinese style metal anchors together with rope cable, six cargo hatches, a small single capstan, a large hand operated barrel windlass with spikes and a smaller windlass, a small sampan with a single oar, a gangplank, two circular lifebuoys painted white with Chinese inscriptions, a masthead light, a flag, two pairs of wooden tabernacles, two boat hooks, and railings. The model is mounted on an ornately carved pair of wooden crutches connected by two circular wooden dowels all of which is varnished.
