Whaling harpoon gun

Whaling harpoon gun. It has a bow swivel gun, breechloading 1" bore with a steel barrel, brass sight and breech cover. It is inscribed 'W.W. Greener, Birmingham. Made for P. Henderson and Sons, Dundee, no 4'. 'RESOLUTE' is inscribed on the stock.

The introduction of the gun-harpoon led to an increase in the number of whales killed.
This harpoon gun was used on ‘Resolute’, an auxilliary steam whaler of 680 tons, built in 1879. Part of the Dundee fleet from 1880, she was crushed by the Arctic ice and sank in 1886.
