Cargo vessel; Pechili trader

Scale: 1:80. A model of a type of Northern Chinese junk known as a Pechili Trader (or also as a Kiangsu Trader, Shantung Trader or Shantung Five-masted junk). The model is made from wood, unpainted and varnished a light brown colour. It is rigged with sails set on all five masts. The hull has a bluff bow, broad flat stern and an overhanging counter enclosing the rudder-well. It is flat-bottomed but the centre plank is thicker and heavier than the others and made of hardwood. None of the five masts is stepped vertically and only the main foremast is stepped in the centreline. The bow mast is stepped forward on the port side and canted well forward. The quarter mast is housed against the port side of the rudder-well. The mizzen mast is stepped against the inboard face of the counter, just port of the centre line, and is slightly raked aft. All the sails are almost rectangular and there are red flags flying from the top of the main mast and mizzen mast. A large gun, painted silver, is mounted on a swivel base on the midship starboard side. Equipment includes a small work boat with steering oar, brightly painted life ring, an iron killick, gangplank, and a lantern mounted on a post.
