scale, gunters
Gunters scale in boxwood. Said to have been used to measure Napoleon's corpse. Presented by ship's carpenter Dan O'Riley to Robert Griffin (1785-1864) Colour Sergeant, Royal Marines, Sergeant of the Guard at St Helena.
Brass studs at places of heavy usage to prevent damage from dividers.
comments from Otto van Poelje
Third known example of the version where the diagonal scale on the front has been replaced by a series of plotting scales to give a characteristic "wavy" pattern. The others are your own NAV0117 (improvd by B.Martin), and one in a private collection. The improved version by Donn does not have this, although in his pamphlet/manual Donn writes that he had considered this set of plotting scales iso the diagonal scale.
