Achromatic Telescope

This achromatic telescope has a mahogany barrel and brass fittings that include three draw tubes, sliding eyepiece and objective lens covers and a sliding sun shade. An inscription on the smallest draw tube names the maker and telescope type - 'DOLLAND LONDON NIGHT OR DAY'. It is not certain whether this is an accidental misspelling of the name Dollond, an attempt to pass off the telescope as being by this famous maker, or the name of a maker or retailer who happened to have a similar name. A second inscription on the barrel reads 'Horatio Nelson R.N. from E.L.H. & T.M.H. 1803', suggesting that it was a gift to Lord Nelson from Emma Lydia Hamilton and Thomas Masterman Hardy, although this has not been proved. In addition, the roman numerals 'XXI' are roughly inscribed in a number of places, presumably as part of the manufacturing and assembly process. The telescope is now held in a wooden box.
