Officer of the Watch telescope
This is an achromatic Officer of the Watch telescope that would have been used on the deck of a ship to make general observations, for instance of signals from other ships. The barrel is covered in rope work, while the single draw tube and fittings are made of silvered brass. These fittings include a sliding sun shade, an objective lens cap and a sliding eyepiece cover. The maker's name appears on the draw tube as 'Ross London'. In addition, the number ‘II’ is roughly inscribed on various parts, presumably as part of the manufacturing and assembly process. The telescope was said to have belonged to Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769–1839), but this has not been proved.
