Merchant vessel; Batil
Scale: Unknown. A model of a Kuwaiti batil made entirely in wood with metal fittings and rigged with furled sails. The hull has been carved from wood and has been painted white below the waterline and varnished above. There are two masts, both lateen rigged. There is a long bowsprit which is depicted stowed. The bow is steeply raked and at the top there is a stylised rope decoration. The main deck has an open, trapezium shaped, hatch and a second hatch in front of it with a wooden hatch cover. The upper deck has a working compass and a capstan. The poop deck has a seat built into it situated to the starboard side of the wheel. There is a jackstaff at the aft end of the poop deck. The stern is elaborately carved and the stern quarters have a lattice-like carved decoration. There are a pair of stern davits, the ends painted white, from which hang a workboat crudely carved and painted blue and white. Deck equipment includes an oil lantern, stocked anchor, portable oven, and cooking pot and kettle. The model is mounted on a crudely made wooden display stand with decoratively shaped end panels.
