Opthalmic instruments. Mauve leather case lined with blue velvet containing set of seven ivory handled opthalmic instruments, and two metal instruments within a flap in the lid section. Instruments consist of two with very fine slightly curved needle-like points for probing, another with point bent over a double ended instrument, blunt flattened end, another with blade tapering to point and two bladed cutting instruments, one spear-shaped, the other double-edged. One coiled and one double-ended metal instrument, ribbed both sides, fish-tail like ends, both contained inside lid. Belonged to Surgeon W.J. Gruggen RN fl.1841-1852.
