Passenger vessel; Canoe, outrigger

Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of an outrigger canoe, used in Fiji (South Pacific island group, Oceania). The model is finished in natural wood and is devoid of any carved or painted decoration. The lower hull is carved from a single piece of wood, dugout from a single trunk, and is double ended finishing with a vertical ended stem at one end and a small leaf transom at the other. The bulwarks are secured by lashings made from plaited coir (coconut) fibre rope with the apertures sealed with a compound to make the hull watertight. There is a flat and tapering deck at the bow and stern again lashed to the main hull with coir fibre rope with the main wooden platform, outrigger frame, and float lashed across the hull amidships. The platform consists of two rectangular planks and four square timbers all running longitudinally and supported on five circular timbers running athwartships. The solid cigar shape float is connected to the frame by three pairs of A shaped timbers. The single mast is mounted and pivoted on a square mast step lashed to the platform amidships and is also supported by a curved circular timber with a gaff shaped base located and lashed onto the outrigger frame. The triangular sail is made from matted fibre consisting of six individual cloths stitched together with a dark fibrous thread. The lateen yard and boom are wooden and are stitched into the sail. The forward end of the lateen yard is located into a groove on the foredeck and held in place by the tension of both the stays and the halyard of the rigging. There is a large steering oar with a circular staff and a flat rectangular blade which is rigged aft of the platform and secured to the mast by a long rope thread. Other fittings include a carved wooden bailer and two short wooden paddles with flat tapering blades.
