Batil dhow; Passenger/cargo vessel; Fishing vessel

Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a batil dhow from the Persian Gulf and Oman. The model is made from a single piece of wood and consists of a flat floor with near vertical sides, and an elliptical flat deck. The whole model is left in a natural wood state and is devoid of any carved or painted decoration. The bow is long and raked and is complete with an oval disk above the stem with a bowsprit projecting forward. At the stern is a vertical stern post with carved decoration projecting forward. Just forward of this is a raised narrow platform with a pair of rails projecting forward (starboard rails are missing) finishing just aft of the main mast tabernacle. Just forward of the mast is a cargo hatch with a carved circular bollard just behind a smaller cargo hatch. On either side of the cargo space are five pairs of projecting timber heads, only two of which survive. Judging by the crude construction and the evidence of water damage along the hull it is suggested that the model was made as a sailing toy.
