Officer of the Watch telescope
This achromatic telescope would have been used on the deck of a ship to make general observations, for instance of signals from other ships. The barrel is covered in rope work, while the single draw tube and fittings are made of silvered brass. These fittings include a sliding sun shade and a pivoted eyepiece cover, but the objective lens cap is now missing. The draw tube also has a variable eyepiece tube, with settings marked 15, 18 and 21. The maker's name appears on the draw tube as 'Cary, London'. A second inscription on the draw tube names 'H.C. Lockyer R.N. 1894', the telescope's original owner. Captain Hughes C. Lockyer commanded the battleship HMS ‘Implacable’ in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas during the First World War, 1914–18.
